The other day one of my daughter\u2019s friends were over and mentioned that Sponge Bob sometimes talks about \u201cS – E – X\u201d.<\/strong>   My daughter turns and asks\u2026\u201dMom, what\u2019s that mean?\u201d <\/strong><\/em><\/span>  So I quickly tell her I\u2019ll talk to you about it later as my stomach goes into my throat <\/strong>and I realize that it\u2019s time to face this conversation after trying to avoid it for the past year!<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
As her and her friend are playing, my husband and I are discussing my plan of attack on how to handle this conversation.  He thinks I should go all scientific, but I think the less I tell her the better, at this age anyway.   We discuss how I should say it and then whole time I\u2019m laughing and realizing I\u2019m not a mature enough adult to talk about this stuff with my daughter! <\/span>   <\/strong>My husband reassures me that I\u2019ll do a good job and to not be specific\u2026 just tell the facts and move on. <\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
So, it\u2019s time\u2026 time to tell my daughter about the birds and the bees.   <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Whew\u2026 I\u2019m not ready for this!   <\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Here goes\u2026.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cHey Pixie!  Come sit outside with me, I want to talk to you about something.\u201d   \u201cSo, do you know what sex means?\u201d   Pixie responds with \u201cit means like someone that looks good\u2026 like being sexy\u201d.    <\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I tell her no, that\u2019s different.   So then I tell her what the technical names of our parts are because somehow I\u2019ve always referred to it as our <\/span>\u201cJunk\u201d.<\/strong>  I know, I\u2019m an awful parent!   You can judge if you want.  <\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
So\u2026 I tell her what the technical names of our \u201cjunk\u201d and then I tell her that like a garden where you plant seeds, a guy has to plant a seed into a lady so we can have a baby.    So the \u2026.. goes into the \u2026\u2026  She gives me this disgusted look and then yells <\/span>\u201cDID DADDY DO THAT TO YOU!!!???\u201d<\/span>   <\/strong> I say \u201cyes, but look now we have you because of it\u201d.    She jumps up angry and throws her hands in the air and says \u201cI\u2019m too young to know this stuff!   I can\u2019t believe you told me this!\u201d  <\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n

Being the great parent I am, I cannot stop laughing through the whole conversation.  I\u2019m like a little kid in study hall talking when I should be quite.   I feel like I\u2019m in a different body as I try to stay serious, but my inner middle school child comes out and cannot stop laughing. <\/span>  <\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
So, in a panic as she runs outside I yell\u2026<\/span> \u201cJust like Santa Claus, sex is another thing that YOU don\u2019t tell others about\u2026 let their parents do that!\u201d  <\/strong><\/span> Oh, and I end the conversation with\u2026 \u201cRemember, you can always come to me if you have questions.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The entire time my husband is in the house laughing his butt off at me and my mad<\/em><\/u> parenting skills! <\/span>  <\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Well\u2026 it\u2019s done.   The talk has been had.<\/strong>  If she wants to know more she knows I\u2019m here and available to talk about it.   <\/span><\/div>\n

Sometimes we don\u2019t do everything right in parenting.    Just like in life.   Just like in art!    Man, I have made some mistakes!   More than I like to admit, but I think the lesson here is to just keep trying.   Keep trying in life, keep trying in art.   <\/span><\/div>\n
